About Us:
Jonah and I having been playing guitar for a combined total of over 30 years! We met 5 years ago while attending Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) to study classical guitar performance.
After a few (or maybe more…) pints of beer at the university bar we soon came to realize that while we both loved the classical guitar, we also loved much of the same “popular” music, including rock and roll, heavy metal and the blues. A friendship was born and we’ve since gone on to finish our degrees, during which time we’ve performed together on a number of occasions both as a classical duo and as long-haired, hard partying rockers! haha!
During our degrees we also got to do some of this cool stuff:
- Rob was a top finalist in the Canadian National Classical Guitar Competition
- Jonah has been a featured soloist at Acadia Universities Classical Guitar Series
- This past september Rob completed a small tour of Belgium and The Netherlands
- Jonah competed and won first prize with his guitar ensemble at the Nova Scotia Music Competition.
- We’ve both had the opportunity to study with numerous amazing players including people like fingerstyle legend Don Ross, classical guitarists Jeremy Jouve, Daniel Bolshoy, Dale Kavanagh, Canadian blues legend Roger Howse and many others.
So now, 5 years and too many student loans to count later, we are both “educated” guitarists!
Great… Now what?
Again, after a few (or maybe more…) pints of beer we hatched a plan for TheSixStringAcademy.com!
Basically we want to combine our love of guitar, our knowledge gained as classical musicians and our many years spent banging out Black Sabbath riffs and put it all together to help you either learn how to play, or get better! Simple as that.
Features:
- For complete beginners Jonah has designed a 10 step program with 18 videos to help you progress from knowing nothing about the guitar to being able to play all of the basic chords and melodies and apply this knowledge to learning a variety of easy guitar songs. All this while developing a proper technique without any bad habits!
- For intermediate players looking to enhance their playing Rob has produced a series of technical exercise videos based on technqiues that he has picked up over 5 years of intensive study at university. This series is constantly being updated.
- We will also be providing step by step instruction on how to play some of the most popular songs on guitar. The best part about this? YOU Tell us what songs you want to see in the new videos!
- Tasty Licks! Jonah has made videos of some very cool licks which he walks you through step-by-step in our “Tasty Licks” section
- Classical Guitar! – Rob has produced a set of videos designed to help beginner/intermediate classical guitarists develop a beautiful and relaxed technique – with some of the best technical exercises you can practice on the classical guitar!
- Advanced lessons on Travis Picking and Carter Style!
- Exclusive user forums where you can interact with both Jonah and myself, ask us questions, or just chat with other guitarists who are learning just like you are!
- Our plan is for monthly webinars and interviews with some great guitarists as well as technique workshops which you can participate in.
